Donald Newell, a longtime member of the Hubbard Board of Education, has been honored by the Ohio School Board Association for his dedicated service to the school district. With 21 years of experience as a board member, Newell is set to complete his latest term, which will take his total years of service to 24 years, making him the longest-serving board member in Hubbard’s history.
“Serving more than 20 years on a school board reflects an extraordinary commitment to our students," Ohio School Boards Association Chief Executive Officer Dr. Kathy McFarland said. "Mr. Newell’s achievement represents two decades of leadership and tireless advocacy, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students. We deeply appreciate Mr. Newell’s dedicated service, which exemplifies true community spirit and strengthens the foundation of public education.”
Newell’s journey began when he filled the term left vacant by Mr. Clemente, after being one of 21 candidates for the position. Appointed by Judge Swift, Newell chose to run for re-election and has served the community ever since.
“Mr. Newell’s years of service and unwavering dedication to Hubbard Schools as a board member have left a lasting impact. He has always put students at the forefront of his decision-making, ensuring their best interests come first,” said Hubbard Superintendent Raymond Soloman.
“I serve on the board because of the kids. I want to ensure they have the best possible education and opportunities for success,” said Newell, reflecting on his years of service.
A proud Hubbard High School graduate from the Class of 1974, Newell is deeply rooted in the community. He and his wife have raised three children, all of whom attended Hubbard schools, and now, they are proud grandparents to eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Among Newell’s greatest accomplishments during his tenure are his roles in:
Saving the Hubbard Community Pool
Bringing college prep courses to the high school
Building new school facilities
Preserving the Roosevelt Gym
Hiring seven superintendents and five treasurers
After completing this final term, Newell has said he will retire from his role, marking the end of an era in Hubbard’s educational leadership.
